TubieTalk: Feeding Tube Safety

Feeding tube safety is essential when it comes to the well-being of individuals who require enteral nutrition support. The process of inserting a feeding tube involves careful consideration and adherence to proper protocols to minimize potential risks and ensure patient comfort. Healthcare professionals, caregivers, parent, siblings, peers, and tubies themself play a vital role in maintaining feeding tube safety by employing sterile techniques during insertion, closely monitoring the placement and function of the tube, and regularly assessing the area for any signs of complications.

Proper education and training for both the medical staff and caregivers are crucial to prevent errors in handling and administering feedings, reducing the risk of aspiration, infections, or dislodgement. Routine maintenance, including regular flushing and periodic tube replacements, is also essential to sustain feeding tube safety and prevent obstructions or bacterial overgrowth.

Throughout the month of June, TubieTalk reached out to the Tubie community and gathered all things safety when it comes to feeding tubes. Below you will find a few Tubie Tips from our Tubies!

“Making sure to talk with your team to ask about water activities and what works for you! Always ask a Dr. before doing anything you are unsure about with a tube or picc line.” -Julia

“Tube clips are a MUST to keep giving sets out the way, especially when I’m at work!” -Sophie

“Make sure you know the risks but also know you can have water fun with a tube".” -Julia

“Tape your extension to your stomach so it doesn’t get pulled.” -Autumn

By prioritizing safety protocols during procedures and continuous aftercare necessities, you will be able to uphold feeding tube safety, as well as safeguard the nutrition and well-being of patients who rely on enteral feeding to aid in nutrition.
