#TubieTalk: Fed is Best

March is National Nutrition Month! “National Nutrition Month® is an annual campaign created 50 years ago in 1973 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. During the month of March, everyone is invited to learn about how a healthy and balanced diet can fuel your mind, body, and overall well-being. However, it's important to remember that every person's nutrition needs are unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healthy eating.

One of the most common nutrition-related concerns for new parents is how to feed their newborn. While breastfeeding is often recommended, it's important to understand that not all mothers are able to breastfeed, and some babies may have difficulty latching or may need additional supplementation. It's important to note that formula feeding can be a safe and healthy option for babies. Additionally, for medically complex children who may have difficulty eating or absorbing nutrients orally, enteral nutrition (tube feeding) may be necessary. That's where the "Fed is Best" movement comes in. The goal of this movement is to encourage parents to prioritize their baby's nutrition above all else, whether that means breastfeeding, formula, or tube feeding!

Regardless of how your baby is fed, it's important to prioritize their nutrition and monitor their growth and development to ensure they are getting the nutrients they need. This may mean working with a healthcare provider or registered dietitian to create a feeding plan that works for your family.  As your child grows, it's important to continue to prioritize their nutrition. Offering a variety of nutrient-dense foods while modeling healthy eating behavior, you can help set them up for a lifetime of healthy habits.

Remember, there is no "perfect" way to eat, and it's okay to adjust your diet based on your individual needs and preferences. By prioritizing your nutrition and making informed choices about what you eat, you can fuel your potential and lead a healthy, fulfilling life.
